Professor Pepperell involved in neuroscientific study

A neuroscientific study conducted by a team based at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and involving Professor Robert Pepperell, Head of Fine Art, has been published in the leading journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. The study looked at the effect of training subjects with no special art historical knowledge how to read cubist paintings by Picasso, Braque and Gris. These subjects were then shown a series of cubist paintings and asked to identify objects within them. Their reaction times were compared with other subjects who didn’t have the training. The study found that even though the training session was short, it had an unexpectedly strong effect on their ability to recognise objects.

Richard Cox's images tour UK and India

Richard Cox Richard Cox's Subterranean Architecture, Stepwells in Western India is currently touring the UK and India.

Over the last three years Richard has been working in North Western India documenting a little known aspect of Indian traditional architecture, Stepwells. This digital photographic record has formed his exhibition.

Richard is currently in India collaborating with INTACH, The Indian National Trust for Art Culture and Heritage, documenting wells in Haryana. This is in support of their current bid to establish some of the most important stepwells as World Heritage sites with UNESCO. One in particular, Abhaneri Chand Boari, built in 825 AD is an especially large and impressive structure in the form of an immense inverted pyramid nearly 200 feet square and 180 feet deep. Unusually its design, originally Hindi, has been partially restored and added to by the Mogul Dynasties making it architecturally hybrid. These wells are extremely strong and can resist earthquakes to 7.6RS.
