Textiles student’s design success
BA (hons) Textiles: Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors/Textile Art
A talented young artist from Cardiff School of Art & Design is hoping to see her work go into production this year after winning a prestigious competition sponsored by one of Wales’ leading woven textile brands – Melin Tregwynt.
Lauren Shields, a BA Textiles student scooped first prize after designing a range of innovative prints that successfully mirror the sponsor’s aim of combining authentic Welsh tradition with strong contemporary design. Textiles student’s design success
The competition brief saw students tasked with producing a set of designs that highlight a potential gap in Melin Tregwynt’s design led market and that could be used to develop a commercially viable collection for the internationally acclaimed brand.
Commenting on her success, Lauren said: “I am delighted to have won this competition and I look forward to further developing my ideas with Melin Tregwynt.”
“The wonderful woven materials that they produce and their commitment to quality and creativity provided me with the perfect inspiration,” she added.
Melin Tregwyn, which has its own mill in Pembrokeshire and produces an extensive range of products for its world-wide client base including blankets, cushions, throws, clothing, wallpaper, lampshades and upholstery, will now explore the opportunities best-suited to developing Lauren’s designs further.
The competition, which saw students working to a competitive brief that was presented to esteemed industry professionals, was launched as part of the Cardiff School of Art and Design’s drive and commitment to preparing students for gaining employment in Wales’ growing design industry.

At Cardiff School of Art & Design, we believe in being at the top of our game and that includes being able to deliver programmes that really make a difference. We give our students every opportunity to explore all kinds of creative and professional possibilities, in an environment that recognises the importance of taking risks and seizing the initiative. We are interested in ideas and how these are examined through practice.
