GALLERY TALK - 12.15pm, Nov 24th, Howard Gardens Gallery
As part of the current MAPPING Exhibition at the Howard Gardens Gallery, Fine Art lecturer Rona Lee and sonar-geophysicist Tim Le Bas will discuss their current project exploring ways of modelling and visualising the emergent landscape of the deep seabed. All welcome.

This exhibition features five artists whose work is connected with geographical locations and in four cases the creation, use or remaking of maps.
Rona Lee’s ongoing residency with the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, has taken her on voyages and lead her to explore the geography of the ocean floor, an extensive and ambitious project which covers many related ideas and is supported by the Leverhulme Trust.
Carol Jackman has been creating a series of screen prints based upon the map of India (her place of birth) and especially the intricate complexity of the Ganges Delta which changes year on year with dramatic implications for those who live in this region.
Anna Bush Crews has made a long term study of the Usk River that runs through Newport, where she lives, recording the changes through the seasons. Her DVD has recorded an unusual Eddy which has encompassed the complex detritus of a post industrial river, which slowly revolves during the hour long loop.
Kathy Prendergast’s extraordinary “modified” maps compel us to look a great deal more closely at cartography we might otherwise take for granted. Her print “Lost”, is a map of America from which all names have been excised unless the word “Lost” forms part of the place name. Although this piece of her work cannot be seen in this show there are other examples.
Sophie Scaplehorn, a recent graduate is well aware of Kathy’s work and has developed her own personal and intricate approach to modifying maps. Rendering the surface of her maps to something similar to large hand cut sheets of lace, she removes all the place names with a scaple. remaking the sheet into something with a completely different character.
Private View
12th November 2009
This exhibition continues until 11th December and is open 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm on Saturdays. Entrance is free.
