Dr Jeffrey Jones awarded Readership
Dr Jeffrey Jones was recently awarded the title of Reader in Ceramics at Cardiff School of Art and Design.
Dr Jones is currently a visiting Research Fellow at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, where he is researching the relationships between ceramics and sculpture. His research will culminate in the curation of an exhibition which will be shown at the Institute between September 2010 and January 2011. The working title of the exhibition is ‘A Rough Equivalent: Mid Twentieth Century Sculpture and Ceramics from the Leeds and York Collections’. A Vice Chancellor’s Doctoral Award is enabling Dr Jones’ research in this area to continue at UWIC through the appointment of Laura Gray as a PhD student. Ms Gray was formerly an assistant curator at the Harris Museum, Preston, and as part of her PhD project she plans to curate an exhibition at the School of Art, Aberystwyth University, during the Aberystwyth International Ceramics Festival in July 2011.
For many years Dr Jones has worked closely with Moira Vincentelli, Curator of the Ceramic Collection and Archive at Aberystwyth, and those links are now being strengthened with the establishment of the National Centre for Ceramics in Wales. The Centre is a focus for the future development of ceramics research and education at the two sites and it provides opportunities for other institutions, organisations and individuals within Wales to work together with Cardiff and Aberystwyth to encourage and support the practice and study of ceramics at all levels. UWIC and Aberystwyth, along with UWE Bristol and Bath Spa Universities, continue to collaborate in publishing the electronic journal Interpreting Ceramics. As founder editor of the journal, Dr Jones has led this project for the last twelve years and he is currently working with Dr Mary Drach McInnes of Alfred University, New York State, in the preparation of the next issue. www.interpretingceramics.com is now established as a key site for the dissemination of research outcomes to the ceramics community worldwide.
