AHRC 2010 studentship applications
UWIC can submit five applications to the AHRC 2010 studentship competition. UWIC runs an internal competition to select the strongest five applications and references, drawn from Masters and Doctoral applications. The steps below set out the actions which applicants need to take to enter UWIC’s internal competition, deadline Monday 15 March. The five successful applicants at the UWIC stage will be notified on 7 April, when a second process will begin in which UWIC’s Research Office guides the five applicants through the electronic application submission process. The final deadline is 6 May 2010. Applications direct to the AHRC cannot be made. A deadline summary appears at the bottom of this page.
To be eligible to apply, you should have registered your interest with the appropriate programme leader by the date given on the programme’s website. Normally this is 1 February.
1. Read through the AHRC Guides on the scheme to establish
• if you are eligible for the award
• that you can supply all the information that they require
• Links for all information are:
· AHRC Postgraduate Funding Opportunities FAQs (pdf format)
· AHRC 2010 Studentship Competition Guide (pdf format)
· AHRC Guide to Student Eligibility (pdf format)
· Studentship Terms and Conditions (pdf format)
· AHRC Studentship Competition Funding Opportunities web page
2. Approach your referees as soon as possible, sending them the AHRC Guidance for Referees UWIC document and the AHRC Referee Report UWIC form. It is vital that you draw your referees’ attention to the fact that the AHRC require very specific information. References which do not adhere to the AHRC’s requirements may lead to the rejection of your application. All parties need to be aware that, given the competition for awards, only applications with excellent references stand any chance of success. References should be completed on the AHRC Referee Report UWIC form and submitted electronically as Word attachments by midday Monday 15 March to Debbie Savage, Research Coordinator, Cardiff School of Art and Design, UWIC, at dsavage@uwic.ac.uk. Keep in regular contact with your referee to provide gentle encouragement for completion of your reference by the deadline.
3. Write your case for support, including the project outline, in accordance with Annex A in the AHRC 2010 Studentship Competition Guide (link above). Other general guidelines on what makes a good case for support, consistent with the AHRC’s, are available on CSAD’s research degrees website.
4. A ‘case for support’ writing workshop will be held at CSAD Howard Gardens 4.00 – 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 2 March, room S314. Please attend if you can as the sharing of experience can be very beneficial. You should seek guidance from your intended supervisor. Tutorials with CSAD’s Graduate Studies Coordinator, Clive Cazeaux, will also be available.
5. Complete the UWIC AHRC application form, including the case for support, using the appropriate form – Doctoral or Masters Professional or Masters Research – and submit it electronically as Word attachments by midday Monday 15 March to Debbie Savage, Research Coordinator, Cardiff School of Art and Design, UWIC, at dsavage@uwic.ac.uk. All sections must be completed. Incomplete forms will be rejected.
