Super Vision: insight and interaction in graduate art and design research

1.30 – 6.30 p.m.

Tuesday 23 March 2010, at CSAD, Howard Gardens, Cardiff.

Keynote speakers: Suze Adams and Dr Iain Biggs (UWE, Bristol)

A symposium on the supervisory process in graduate art and design research:

• how supervisory teams plan and shape the research process;

• how the interests of supervisor and student might intersect, how they might become interlocutors, with a view to co-authorship of an article;

• the pleasures of supervision in art and design research (and some of the obstacles too, if appropriate at an open forum).

Latest NewsResearch studentship applications 2010

For students considering applying to Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) to undertake a research degree (MPhil or PhD), commencing October 2010, now is the time to get in touch with us. Early contact is especially important if you are considering applying to research councils, such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council, for funding to meet the costs of living expenses and tuition fees.

Writing a clear, concise and impressive research proposal is a lot of work. CSAD offers guidance and workshops in research proposal writing to help you with the process. To register your interest in applying for an MPhil or PhD place at CSAD, and to allow us to work with you to develop your proposal in time for 1 May 2010 (the time around which funding council deadlines tend to close), please do the following two things by Monday 1 February 2010:

1. Contact the member of staff whose research interests make them best placed to supervise your project. Identify the member of staff most relevant to your interest through one of CSAD’s research centres or groups here. Alternatively, for a list of available supervisors, click here.

2. Contact Dr Clive Cazeaux, Graduate Studies Coordinator, to register your interest. Tel. +44 (0)29 2041 6680. Email: ccazeaux@uwic.ac.uk.

Latest NewsPostgraduate Certificate in Professional and Research Skills: Art & Design programme (CPRS)

• What is research in art and design?

• What constitutes professional art or design practice?

• Which professional or research methods are applicable?

• How can something apparently subjective contribute to knowledge?

CSAD’s new Postgraduate Certificate in Professional and Research Skills: Art & Design programme (CPRS) starts in October 2009. It offers a thorough and comprehensive introduction to the range of methods, strategies and debates which can apply to art and design professional practice and research. CPRS is included as part of Cardiff School of Art and Design’s MFA, MPhil and PhD programmes, but can also be taken as a stand-alone programme in preparation for writing a research application or a professional intervention project.

Cardiff School of Art and Design has a long history in the generation of art and design research. It has an active and supportive research environment, and its supervisors have significant expertise in the various ways in which art, design and engineering theory and practice can contribute to knowledge. The School’s research is recognised as playing a key role in supporting economic, social and cultural development in Wales and the UK.

The School welcomes research degree applications in the following fields: art, design, design technologies, and the history and theory of art and design

Through its research, CSAD aims to generate new knowledge and understanding of art and design, and to contribute to the creative industries, the cultural sector, manufacturing, the professions and the community. Furthermore, the School is a co-founding institution (with Newport School of Art Media and Design), of Wales Institute of Research in Art and Design (WIRAD), allowing the research experience of its students and supervisors to be enhanced through cross-School collaboration and exchange.

CSAD provides opportunities to undertake supervised research that lead to the awards of Master of Philosophy (MPhil; 1-2 years full-time, 2-5 years part-time) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD; 3-4 years full time, 4-7 years part time). The awards of MPhil and PhD are achieved through a sustained piece of original investigative research leading to a thesis which can be theoretical or practice-based. The School welcomes research degree applications in the following fields: art, design, design technologies, and the history and theory of art and design. It is also keen to promote interdisciplinary research between art and design and other fields of practice or enquiry.
